Three small cups. No handles. Hand-painted in glaze with red, blue, and yellow Alpine flowers on a field of green stems and leaves. These are the ones that were made to be held with both hands over a warm breakfast in an Austrian mountain inn — and they bring exactly that feeling to whatever table they grace.
These Lilien Porzellan cups are from the Alpen Flora pattern, produced in Austria in the 1950s to early 1960s. The bottom of each cup carries the mark Handgemalt Inglasur — German for Hand-Painted In Glaze — confirming that the flowers were applied by hand and then fired under the glaze for permanence and depth. Lilien Porzellan was one of Austria's most respected porcelain manufacturers, known for quality that rivaled the finest European tableware houses.
Here is what makes these particularly special: in the late 1960s Lilien Porzellan stopped making hand-painted tableware entirely and pivoted to professional hotel and restaurant porcelain. The Alpen Flora pattern survived the transition — it is still produced today as Josephine Alpenflora for the hospitality industry — but it is now machine-printed, not hand-painted. These cups, from the hand-painted era, are the originals. The ones the hotels wished they still had.
Use them as tea cups, espresso cups, dessert cups, or sake cups. They hold approximately 3 oz — perfect for a small, intentional pour of something special.
Excellent condition — no chips, cracks, or scratches on any of the three cups.
